A partner and member of our Litigation Group, Howie’s current focus is on personal injury, civil rights, municipal law and alternative dispute resolution. Well-known for his proficient conciliation skills, Howie is an experienced arbitrator and mediator in the civil litigation field. Based upon his current work as a trial attorney on insurance-related issues, Howie is often chosen by his peers as a mediator in insurance-related matters. He has also served as a Special Master in the Court of Common Pleas of Allegheny County, presiding over both jury and non-jury trials.
Howie has recently added to his mediation skills by successfully completing forty-hours of mediation training at Duke University, as presented by Beason & Ellis Conflict Resolution, LLC. This training is also in compliance with the requirements for the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania and its pilot program instituting mandatory alternative dispute resolution.
Howie began his legal career as a Law Clerk for the highly-regarded trial judge, I. Martin Wekselman. Over the course of his legal career he has gained a wide-ranging foundation in the civil litigation field, preparing him not only for his current work at Goehring, Rutter & Boehm, but also enabling him to offer his skills as a mediator to his fellow trial lawyers.
Howie’s natural leadership skills easily lend themselves to service on multiple boards and organizations. For years, Howie has served as a very active member of the Allegheny County Bar Association. He was elected to its Board of Governors for two successive 3-year terms from 2000 to 2006. He had previously been elected to the Judiciary Committee, serving as Chair in 1999. He has participated on numerous other committees and sections of the ACBA. In June 2007, Howie was elected and began serving a 2-year term as the Secretary of the ACBA.
In addition to his service with the ACBA, he was also elected to the Academy of Trial Lawyers of Allegheny County, an organization which recognizes the top trial lawyers in the County, and has served on its Board of Governors.
His involvement with non-profit organizations include: board member of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation of Pittsburgh, a board member of the Pittsburgh Filmmakers and volunteer services at Animal Friends.
Dedicated to mentoring of new attorneys, Howie is a much sought after advisor to the associates of GRB, as well as within the Allegheny County Bar Association. He is often commended on his lectures for the National Institute of Trial Advocacy.
A graduate of the Pennsylvania State University, Howie earned his Juris Doctor from Duquesne University School of Law. He is admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of the United States, the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania, the Supreme Court of West Virginia, the United States Third Circuit Court of Appeals, and the United States District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania.
One of Howie's more recent articles, “Ethical Considerations for Mediators,” was published in Today’s Attorney, September 2006.
